When is a Bone Graft Recommended for Oral Surgery?

Often times, the use of bone grafts are necessary during oral surgery procedures. But, oral surgery can be frightening for a lot of people because it may be unknown territory. However, oral surgeons and dentists are trained to know what to do. There are a few different reasons why bone grafts might be needed.

While oral surgeons undergo extensive training in their fields, there are times when they open up a patient’s gums or tissues covering the jawbone and they discover something unexpected. In these situations, bone grafts can be very helpful. Find out more in this article as we go over some of the common reasons why bone grafts are needed during oral surgery.

When a bone graft is recommended

Saving teeth

Oral surgery is commonly used when a person is in a severe stage of periodontal disease. Often times, oral surgery is one of the only ways that the gums can be treated. However, if the gums are severely damaged, a bone graft may not only be recommended but necessary.

When the gums deteriorate due to periodontal disease, the surrounding bone may also begin to erode. When the bone that supports the teeth begins to erode, the teeth are at risk of falling out. A bone graft can help save the bone around the loose teeth. In this case, the graft will regenerate the bone which will increase the support for the teeth.

Dental implants

Dental implants are often placed by an oral surgeon because they are so familiar with the jawbone, the surrounding tissues and the implant procedure. Implants are used to restore or replace a severely damaged or missing tooth. However, in order for an implant to be placed, there has to be a good amount of bone structure. But, in some scenarios, a person’s bone is already completely gone. This is where a bone graft can help.

A bone graft can be placed in oral surgery in order to help regenerate the bone that needs to be strong and durable for the implant. If the bone isn’t strong enough, then the implant won’t be able to be supported. Once the bone is regenerated enough through the use of the graft then the implant can be successfully placed.

Extractions

Another common reason that a bone graft may be recommended is when a person has to have a tooth pulled. Nobody enjoys having their teeth pulled, but there are times when it is absolutely necessary. However, the thought of not having a tooth can be frightening. With a bone graft, an oral surgeon can place one on after the tooth is extracted so that the bone can be regenerated.

After regeneration of the bone, an artificial tooth can be placed later. Whereas if a bone graft wasn’t used, the bone would naturally erode which may not allow for an artificial tooth to be used.
