You May Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Wisdom TeethMany people need to have their wisdom teeth removed. In fact, statistically around ten million of them are removed every year.  This is a huge number and shows how important the procedure is.  There are many reasons for having them removed which may include them growing in wrong, becoming impacted, infected, or not having enough room in your mouth.  Whatever the reason, Beltran Dental Surgery is an expert at completing the procedure efficiently. If your dentist determines that you need to have them removed, they will likely refer you for treatment – that’s us.  We are the experts in oral surgery which is important for making sure that the procedure is done correctly.  When an expert surgeon extracts a tooth, it will bleed less and cause less pain during the recovery process.  Precision and accuracy matter. One of the main reasons that someone has their wisdom teeth removed is that they become impacted.  When they start to grow in sideways or grow underneath the gums, oral surgery is required to remove them.  The only way they can be removed without a surgical element is if they grow in straight without any issues.  In this case, they may not need to be removed at all.During the procedure, we cut open the gums and create a flap.  The flap is pulled back so that we can access the tooth.  Initially, we will try to wiggle the tooth back and forth to see if it will come loose and allow us simply to pick it up for removal.  Many times, the ligaments holding the tooth in place are so tight that this maneuver will not work.  When this is the case, we typically have to break the wisdom tooth into pieces and pull them out one at a time. After the entire tooth has been removed, we will clean the area to remove any debris before placing the flap back down and stitching it up.  We also use gauze to help stop the bleeding.Having your wisdom teeth removed surgically requires anesthesia.  Most patients go under general anesthesia so that they are not awake and do not feel any pain during the procedure.  This also helps to keep patients comfortable as most would not enjoy being awake during this time. Afterwards, we monitor the bleeding and make sure that patients come out of the anesthesia without any major side effects.  You will not be able to drive home so make sure that you have a ride. The recovery time depends on the individual and how smoothly the operation went.  One of the major benefits of visiting us is that as experts, we are able to ensure the process goes more smoothly than a general dentist would.  After all, we do this every day.  While recovering you will want to eat cool, soft foods like yogurt, ice cream, and popsicles.  To learn more about having your wisdom teeth removed call Beltran Dental Surgery today.
